Company Profile & Past Projects

Living Iron is a diverse steel fabrication company undertaking a wide array of projects from traditional wrought iron through to structural steel.

Living Iron takes pride in producing work of the highest quality and in 2012 was awarded Subcontractor of the Year, as well as winning Subcontractor Award for Steel – Structural Steel (for the Castle Rock project). In 2003 they had received the Master Builder Association's Sub-contractor of the Year (Structural) Award for Perth Zoo Orang-u-tan enclosure.

Craig Parton started Living Iron in 1999 and we now employ 10 skilled crafts people plus support staff. We are confident of our ability to handle any challenge in the steel industry.

  • Short listed for creation of the artwork for the forecourt of the Australian Prospectors & Miners Hall of Fame.
  • Invitation from British Artist Blacksmithing Association to contribute to the blacksmithing competition and exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. I designed and constructed a miniature blacksmith working on a set of fire irons (fire irons were the focus of each contribution). The entry was described as being “incredibly original” and was the only piece in the exhibition for which an offer of purchase was made.
  • Contributed to the gates constructed at the entrance to the Memphis Metal Museum, Tennessee, USA.
  • Contributed to the commemorative bridge built during the 1992 German Blacksmithing Association Conference, Aachen , Germany .

Living Iron 1999 - Present

In 1999 Craig founded Living Iron and since then has forged a name for high quality original and customised steelwork including decorative features, balustrading, pedestrian and driveway gates and structural steel.

Allbend Engineering, Osborne Park 1996 – 1999

Craig joined Allbend Engineering in 1996 where he introduced the use of blacksmithing techniques to fabricate a variety of wrought ironwork.

Steve Wilson Iron, 1995

In May 1995 Craig was asked to manage Steve Wilson Iron while Steve Wilson ran in the Queensland state election. He stayed until October 1996 in the role of senior craftsman and project manager.

Artbusters, Brisbane 1994

In 1994 Craig was contracted by Artbusters to participate in the production of a range of bronze sculptures commissioned by the Gold Coast City Council.

Weis Iron, Toowoomba 1987 – 1994

Craig began his artistic career at Weis Iron in Toowoomba, which specialised in large wrought iron architectural jobs, balustrading, sculpture and private commissions.

During his time at Weis Iron Craig developed his skills on a wide variety of commercial and residential architectural ironwork and was involved in producing a range of furniture designed to display the versatility of iron as a decorative medium.

As his skills developed, so too did his level of accountability, and Craig was soon responsible for designing and developing individual projects as well as managing production and, ultimately, managing the workshop of fourteen staff for a three year period.

Rowhurst Forge , England 1990

Unable to undertake any formal training in the art of blacksmithing in Australia, Craig headed to Europe for 12 months in 1990 to do informal Journeyman style training.

Whilst in England he was employed with Rowhurst Forge where he worked with Richard Quinnell MBE, the then President of the British Artist Blacksmithing Association and internationally acclaimed leader in the field. During his time abroad, Craig learnt traditional skills from an array of talented master craftsmen.
